Helping people and organizations work well in the virtual workplace

Are you an 'instant teleworker'? Begin here...

3/21/2020

Now that you're suddenly working from home, where should you begin to ramp up for maximum productivity?  Here are some tips to help you get started:
  • FOCUS!  If there’s any doubt, clarify top priorities, key deliverables, and major objectives with your manager.  Stay focused on those priorities, deliverables, and objectives.  Be disciplined and avoid the distractions that working from home provides (including the laundry!).
    • These are challenging times for telework with so many kids at home since schools are closed.  This is compounded by the usual distractions that include people, household chores, and creative alternatives to working, e.g., talking with friends, web surfing/shopping, watching TV.
    • Solutions/people: set expectations and interruption rules; negotiate shared childcare arrangements; limit ‘screen time’ when not working to give kids the attention they need – they’re confused, bored, and frustrated, too!
    • Solutions/household stuff: look the other way!, ask the kids to do it, see FOCUS above.Solutions/creative alternatives to working:  turn off what doesn’t relate to your work, don’t take personal calls, use fun distractions as rewards for completing work tasks, see FOCUS above.

      • Staying in touch with team members is critical.  This is not a time to under-communicate.  Rather, remote workers and leaders should reach out using telephone, text, email, and video links where possible to convey a sense of ‘virtual presence’ that lets team members know they’re not isolated or forgotten.  Where possible, connect ‘live’ by phone or videoconference to ‘replicate and simulate’ the real-time interactions that people value and need while they’re working remotely from each other.
